Dr David Thomas

CCI Landscape Restoration Programme Manager

With a focus on Europe, CCI’s Landscape Restoration Programme aims to develop and share mechanisms to attain large-scale restoration of habitats that are rich in biodiversity and resilient to environmental change. I have been seconded from BirdLife International to manage the programme during its start-up phase.

As Head of Communities and Livelihoods at the BirdLife International Secretariat I coordinated a global programme of research, capacity development, advocacy and action focused on empowerment of local, grassroots organisations, and the linkages between biodiversity, human rights, livelihoods and well-being. I have had a long-term interest in the environment and development – an interest that has taken me to Tunisia and Nigeria (examining ecosystem and landscape-scale impacts of dams), and Belize (impacts of coastal tourism development). I have an MSc in Conservation from University College London, and a PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge.
