Professor Ian Newton, OBE, FRS, FRSE

Emeritus Fellow, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (NERC)

My main interests focus on the ecology of birds and their conservation. During my career, I have made particular studies of seed-eating birds, waterfowl and birds of prey, and of the effects of various pesticides and pollutants on bird populations. Educated at the Universities of Bristol and Oxford, I now hold a position of Emeritus Fellow at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, a component of the Natural Environment Research Council. Most of my career has been in research, but I have also served as President of the British Ecological Society and the British Ornithologists’ Union, and as Chairman of Council for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the British Trust for Ornithology.
I have enjoyed my time with CCI, working with colleagues to assess grant applications, for which the main requirements – it seems to me – include a firm commitment to conservation and a broad and passionate interest in the subject area.
