Research grants
Economic and Social Research Council
These support individuals or teams to conduct standard research projects, large-scale surveys and other infrastructure projects or methodological developments in any area within the council’s remit. Research awards can be made for up to five years. Grants range in size from £350,000 to £1 million at 100 per cent full economic cost. 

New investigator grants
Economic and Social Research Council

These support new researchers and academics at the start of their careers to become independent researchers through gaining experience of managing and leading research projects and teams. Grants ranging from £100,000 to £300,000 in full economic costs can be awarded. ESRC’s contribution for UK applicants is 80 per cent of FEC. Around 30 to 35 grants are available per year.

  • Stage 1 - First Links: funds to cover the travel and subsistence for short term visits usually from the UK to another country.

  • Stage 2 - A Broader Relationship: where there is already a more established relationship, researchers may wish to apply for funds to extend this relationship in the country of choice.

  • Stage 3 - Pilot Studies: where relationships are more mature it may be the case that researchers need financial support to carry out pilot research.

  • Stage 4 - Sustainable Interactions: dedicated schemes to support transnational collaboration or where the funding for international collaboration is embedded in the activities of programmes, often within the UK contribution to specific multilateral organisations.
