The overexploitation of wildlife, coupled with habitat degradation, pollution, and the effects of climate change, imperils numerous wildlife populations, pushing them towards the brink of extinction. In 1975, a global Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) entered into force to prevent the extinction of many species of animals and plants due to international trade. In 2015, the United Nations through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) called for urgent action to protect endangered species and their natural habitats. A new Cambridge University Press book, CITES as a Tool for Sustainable Development, focuses on the legal implementation of CITES to aid in achieving the global sustainable development agenda.

Join us for an exciting online event on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 16:00 - 18:00 PM (BST) for inspiring conversations with volume editors and a number of expert contributors. During this event, we will explore pathways for wildlife trade law and policy to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of sustainable development, and explore case studies of specific wildlife species and commodities. Experts from around the world will share their insights on how the CITES framework can contribute to sustainable development, balancing environmental conservation with socio-economic needs, and will also delve into some of the ongoing challenges to implementation.
