The Smell of Money - UCCRI & CEENRG Documentary Film Screening

Film Run Time: 1 hour 24 minutes

Please join us for a film screening and Q&A jointly hosted by UCCRI and CEENRG with Jamie Berger, director of the documentary, “The Smell of Money.” The smell of money — that’s what the pork industry calls the stench of pig waste in the air in eastern North Carolina, where hogs outnumber people 35:1. But to Elsie Herring and others who live near the state’s giant pig factories, the smell is associated with nausea, anxiety, respiratory problems and racial discrimination.

Industrial pork production exploded in North Carolina in the late 1980s as mega-facilities housing thousands of animals displaced small farms. Residents have been fighting for decades for their rights to clean air, clean water and a life free from the stench and pollution of 10 billion gallons of waste the state's 8.8 million pigs produce each year.

The screening will be held in the Main Seminar Room (1.25) on the first floor of the David Attenborough Building
