Ecology and Conservation of Giant Tropical Trees

Dr. Vanessa Rubio is a postdoctoral associate at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, New York, working to understand when, where, and why giant tropical trees die.

The largest 1% of trees contribute half of biomass stocks and fluxes in tropical forests. However, we know very little about variation in giant tree demographics and distribution because they are rare in the landscape. This talk will investigate giant tree ecology, demography, interspecific variation in giant tree mortality with consequences for biomass carbon, and implications for conservation.
