ECR programme: How to make the most of conference oral presentations
Dr Arman Pili, CRI and Department of Zoology
Presenting research at scientific conferences is both a professional opportunity and a core component of our social responsibility as scientists to disseminate knowledge beyond our immediate research groups. Oral presentations, in particular, offer one of the most effective ways to extend the reach and impact of scientific work. However, successful conference presentations go beyond communicating science---it is an opportunity to sell yourself as a credible scientist, potential collaborator, and future leader in your field. The ability to clearly communicate your science while strategically positioning yourself professionally is increasingly essential, particularly in a rapidly evolving research landscape influenced by rapid technological advancements.
In this 1-hour hands-on workshop, participants will learn three practical strategies to make an impressionable, memorable, and engaging oral presentation, and thereby, maximise their impact: (1) "starting strong"---the first Act will make or break your presentation; (2) visual scienceTelling --- transforming static slides into dynamic, story-driven visuals that maintain audience attention and enhance retention; and (3) call-back slide---telling them what you are looking for/doing next. Together, these techniques can strengthen participants’ chances of winning presentation awards, building collaborations, and expanding career opportunities. The workshop draws on my experience winning student presentation awards at three international conferences, receiving post-conference job opportunities, and training in science education and communication, including ScienceTelling bootcamps and National Geographic Spotlight events.
Participants are expected to bring a laptop with PowerPoint or equivalent presentation software installed, as well as a short paragraph of scientific content/a complex figure that they want to transform into dynamic slides during the workshop. Participants are also encouraged to reflect in advance on their personal branding (e.g., what distinguishes yourself from the rest).
