ECR Programme: CRI Main Term Event - Networking for Conservation
Alerick Pacay (Senior Trusts & Foundations Manager, Fauna & Flora)
Learning objective
By the end of this session, participants will understand the value of networking in academic careers and use practical networking tips to advance their personal and professional goals, whether transitioning from academia into conservation practice, influencing policy and decision-making, or securing support and funding for their work.
Session summary
This interactive networking session is designed to demystify networking for PhD students in conservation science and reposition it as a purposeful, ethical, and career-enabling skill rather than a transactional or intimidating activity.
The session will begin with a short introduction exploring why networking matters in conservation, touching on how strong professional relationships can shape career pathways, increase impact, influence policy, and unlock collaboration and funding opportunities. Particular emphasis will be placed on aligning networking approaches with individual styles, values and goals.
This will be followed by a panel discussion with experienced conservation professionals who have successfully used networking to navigate different career trajectories. Students will be encouraged to ask candid questions, reflect on their own experiences, and learn from both panellists and peers in an open, supportive environment.
Participants will then take part in a facilitated role-play exercise, giving them the opportunity to practise initiating conversations, introducing their work clearly, and approaching potential collaborators, funders, or decision-makers in conference and networking scenarios.
The session will conclude with an informal reception with drinks and snacks, in the DAB Common Room, providing space for continued conversation, reflection, and peer-to-peer learning. This final component reinforces the session’s key messages by allowing participants to apply their new skills immediately in a relaxed setting. Note: panellists may or may not be able to stay.
Please sign up here. Numbers are limited to 20 people. If you are no longer able to attend, please inform Diane (dll1000@cam.ac.uk) so that someone else can take your place.
