How do we experience a landscape beyond what we can see?
As part of Fenland Conversations, the Centre for Landscape Regeneration (CLR) and the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) are exploring how listening can offer new ways of understanding landscape, nature and our relationship with place.
How We Listen to scape rich in sound: birds, water, weather, machinery and the voices of the people who live and work there. Through Fenland Conversations, these sounds are being brought together with ecological research, lived experience and local knowledge to explore the changing landscape and its possible futures.
In November we'll be running two days of events inviting participants to approach the landscape through listening in different ways, and to apply sound in their own work and context.
Below you can read more about our sound walk and launch event on 17 November. You can find out more about our workshops on 3 November on this page.
17 November | How We Listen to Sound Walk & Launch Event
Walk: 12.30 - 14.00
Launch Event: 17.00 - 18.00
A listening walk at Coe Fen, soundscape and special event marking the unveiling of a new sound installation in the DAB.
Beginning with a guided lunchtime soundwalk, participants will be invited to slow down and notice the sounds around them before coming together to hear more about Fenland Conversations and experience a specially created Fenland soundscape.
The event will conclude with the unveiling of a new sound installation developed through the project. The installation will remain at the CCI for an extended period, offering an opportunity to return to the work and experience the sounds of the Fens over time.
Together, these events ask us to listen differently: to pay attention to sounds that might normally pass us by, to consider how sound connects us to memory and place, and to explore what listening might tell us about changing and evolving landscapes.
