How do we experience a landscape beyond what we can see?
As part of Fenland Conversations, the Centre for Landscape Regeneration (CLR) and the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) are exploring how listening can offer new ways of understanding landscape, nature and our relationship with place.
How We Listen to scape rich in sound: birds, water, weather, machinery and the voices of the people who live and work there. Through Fenland Conversations, these sounds are being brought together with ecological research, lived experience and local knowledge to explore the changing landscape and its possible futures.
In November we'll be running two days of events inviting participants to approach the landscape through listening in different ways, and to apply sound in their own work and context.
Below you can read more about workshops on 3 November. You can find out more about our sound walk and launch event on 17 November on this page.
3 November | How We Listen to Sound Workshops 10.30 - 13.00 OR 14.00 - 16.30
An active listening and field-recording workshop exploring how we hear, interpret and give meaning to sound.
We will run the workshop twice on the same day so when registering below please select which time works best for you.
Working with sound artist Simon Keep, participants will take part in guided listening exercises and field recording, paying close attention to the sounds around them and considering what influences the way we hear them.
What do we actually hear, and what do we think we hear? What happens when we hear a sound without knowing its source? How much of listening is shaped by memory, imagination and experience? And how might listening offer a different way of experiencing a landscape?
No previous experience of sound recording is needed. Just bring your ears and curiosity.
