Prof. Bill Sutherland CBE FRS has collected a prestigious prize in recognition of his pioneering contributions to conservation science. He was awarded the International Cosmos Prize at a ceremony in Japan last term.
Professor Sutherland, who is a member of the Conservation Research Institute and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Zoology, said:
“This was such surprising honour and tribute to the work with an army of collaborators making a real difference by delivering more effective conservation. This recognition means our evidence-based approach to conservation science will be adopted even more widely.”
The Foundation has bestowed the International Cosmos Prize annually since 1993, with the aim of preserving and developing the philosophy of the “harmonious coexistence of nature and humankind” following the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition held in Osaka, Japan.
Professor Sutherland was invited to officially receive the International Cosmos Prize at a ceremony in Osaka on 12 November 2024. During the ceremony he was presented with a certificate of merit, a medallion and a monetary prize of 40 million Yen by Dr Juichi Yamagiwa, chair of the International Cosmos Prize Committee.
