What we can do about leakage from nature-based solutions?
Nature-based solutions result in leakage - the displacement of food and fibre production to elsewhere – which is a persistent, intractable, and perhaps existential threat to the success of these schemes (e.g. in REDD+, in voluntary and compliance carbon markets, and in state-led Nature-based solutions projects). We review the theory and practice of leakage management, presenting evidence that current practices may be dramatically underestimating leakage effects, and that the available tools for accounting for leakage are insufficiently accurate in practice. We propose a design-based alternative, based on a new framework for thinking about leakage in coupled economic-ecological systems, and propose three principles for immediate operationalization.
