What is conservation success? Measuring recovery and conservation impact with the IUCN Green Status of Species

What does successful conservation look like? In 2012, IUCN Members resolved to find an answer to that question by voting to develop metrics to assess successful conservation of species, ecosystems, and protected areas. In 2021, IUCN launched the resulting species output: a standardized assessment of species recovery and conservation impact called the IUCN Green Status of Species. Through this assessment, species are assigned a Species Recovery Score and Category, which take into account species' ecological functionality and pre-impact baselines. This talk will cover the history of and need for a Green Status of Species, describe how the assessment works and how it is being used, and discuss the next phase in this work: scaling up to inform global policy.
