'Building a Sustainable Legacy—the critical role of communities, ecosystems and waste management in human survival'

Addressing environmental challenges goes beyond mere survival; it requires collective action and a strong sense of community. This conversation delves into the transformative potential of community building as a catalyst for a cleaner and healthier planet. By building inclusive and empowered communities, we unlock the power to drive impactful change in waste management practices, promote sustainable lifestyles, and preserve our ecosystems. Through the lens of inspiring real-life examples and initiatives led by climate justice activist, National Geographic Young Explorer and Founder of the Global Tuesdays for Trash Movement--Sharona Shnayder, this talk uncovers the intrinsic connection between capacity building and environmental well-being. It underscores the urgent need to shift our perspectives from short-term gains to long-term sustainability. Attendees will gain insights into effective engagement strategies for the purpose of nurturing resilient communities, protecting and restoring ecosystems, and implementing effective waste management practices in order to create a sustainable foundation for future generations.

Sharona Shnayder is a Nigerian/Israeli environmental activist, National Geographic Young Explorer, Chairwoman of Social Justice Nonprofit OurstreetsPDX and Founder of the global grassroots movement Tuesdays for Trash-- tackling the garbage crisis facing our planet. Despite how intimidating climate change often feels, in 2020 she chose to channel her fear into mobilizing a movement that has now brought people from 40+ countries together to remove over 37,000 pounds of litter from our environment in 6/7 continents. As a BIPOC youth activist she aims to provide a unique perspective to the climate movement that will reduce global waste while creating a cleaner and more equitable home for everyone on this planet.
