Department of Earth Sciences - CDT Programme Manager

Closing Date: 20th December 2020

The purpose of this role is to support and maintain the University's national and international reputation for excellence for training at the graduate level within the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training for Artificial Intelligence for the Study of Environmental Risk (AI4ER). The post holder will have a significant leadership role in the development, management, and delivery of the CDT programme, with high visibility both within the host department, the University, and beyond.

The role holder will bring significant expertise in the running of large scale programmes and responsibilities include communication with stake holders (students, industry partners, PIs, the public), organisation of events (e.g. the annual 'Challenge Day', 'Research Horizons' workshops) and the organisation of new materials for the programme (e.g. skills training, etc.), and the organisation and running of the Guided Team Challenges and Hackathons.

The AI4ER CDT will train researchers uniquely equipped to develop and apply leading edge computational approaches to address critical global environmental challenges by exploiting vast, diverse and often currently untapped environmental data sets. The CDT brings together academics from 13 departments across the University and the British Antarctic Survey, as well as 36 stakeholders drawn from industry, policy and civil society. The CDT is currently in its second year of an 8-year programme that will train 5 cohorts of ~10 students via a 1+3 MRes/PhD programme. Students study for an MRes in Environmental Data Science in their first year and then proceed to a 3-year PhD in one of the partner Departments. The post thus bears significant responsibilities and the role holder will liaise with, act on the advice of, the external advisory board and steering committees of the programme.

The successful candidate will bring demonstrated expertise in the running of large scale programmes. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant area, excellent writing skills, as well as time management and organisational skills. The ideal candidate will have a track record in delivering complex, multidisciplinary programmes, ideally in an academic setting and be able to demonstrate creativity, team leadership and people management skills. The role holder will have to lead and inspire a small and motivated team and communicate frequently with students, academics and external partners. An ability to explain complex information to nonexperts and to encourage commitment to learn in others is a quality we seek. The role holder is expected to maintain/develop their knowledge in the subject area by reading other academic material, attending conferences, and leading active discussions with relevant individuals.
