We invite applications to a full time, temporary lectureship in Conservation Science. The successful candidate will be a motivated Lecturer (Teaching and Scholarship) who will contribute to teaching at undergraduate and Masters level. The successful candidate will join the dynamic conservation science group at Bangor University and will teach a Masters module in conservation science, deliver part of a 1st year undergraduate course in Environmental Management and Conservation, run tutorials for a small group of 1st year students, and support project students as appropriate.

Applicants should have a PhD in conservation or a related subject (or be near to completion or equivalent published research)  in conservation science or a related discipline (geography, ecology, environmental economics), an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of conservation, and an enthusiasm for teaching in the classroom, in the field and online.

Term starts on the 20th September 2021 but we encourage an earlier start date so the candidate is well prepared before the students arrive back in Bangor. The role is available from the 1st Aug 2021 until 31st January 2022.

Overview

Bangor University was established in 1884 and currently has over 11,000 students. It comprises 14 Academic Schools grouped in to 3 colleges. The College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Bangor University is one of the leading centres in the UK for teaching and research in zoology, biology, environmental sciences, geography, ocean sciences, forestry, computer science and electronic engineering. We offer a suite of Conservation degrees at undergraduate level (including Environmental Conservation, Wildlife Conservation, Zoology with Conservation and Forestry with Conservation) and a taught Master’s programme in Conservation and Land Management.

Bangor University is perfectly located for teaching conservation science and related subjects. We have easy access to Snowdonia National Park and the stunning coastline of the Menai Straits and Ynys Mon and make the most of our incredible surroundings in our teaching. The University’s botanic garden at Treborth and our research farm at Henfaes also provide fantastic facilities for field and lab teaching. The gardens cover 30 acres of high canopy forest including ancient woodland, as well as species-rich natural grasslands and maintain collections of more than 2000 species of plants across seven glasshouses replicating tropical and subtropical habitats. The University’s research farm at Henfaes is unique in that its land goes from the sea to amongst the highest mountains in Wales, giving great diversity of habitats, land uses, climates, and geology on one farm.

Purpose of the Job

The school wishes to appoint a temporary lecturer in Conservation Science (Teaching and Scholarship) to temporarily replace a member of staff. The courses the candidate will be expected to cover are well developed with full materials prepared (and recordings of last year’s teaching) but there is of course scope for the successful candidate to bring in their own interests and expertise. We are looking for someone who can get up to speed quickly and contribute enthusiastically and flexibly to both undergraduate and Masters level teaching.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching
• Deliver the module Conservation Science (aimed at Master’s students). This is a 20-credit module with about 20-35 students a year registered.
• Deliver the conservation component of the 1st year course Environmental Management and Conservation.
• Act as pastoral and academic tutor to 1st year undergraduate.
• Contribute to the development, delivery, and quality assurance of the undergraduate curricula.
• Maintain an excellent standard of teaching as indicated by peer observation, quality assessment, student feedback etc.
• Undertake assessment and provide feedback to students as required.
• Work collaboratively, sharing good practice with colleagues within the school and the college more widely, as appropriate.

Management and Administration
• Develop and co-ordinate modules and programmes as required (materials are prepared but some changes will likely be required).
• Attend all relevant board meetings.
• Carry out other management / administrative duties as specified by the Head of School.

Person Specification

Essential
• Have a PhD in conservation or a related subject (or be near to completion or equivalent published research).  
• Have an excellent understanding of conservation science.
• Have initiative, motivation, and enthusiasm for facilitating learning in a College committed to excellence.
• A willingness to contribute effectively to administrative activities.
• A high level of communication skills.
• Interpersonal skills, so as to be able to engage effectively with academic, research, technical and administrative staff.
• An ability and flexibility to work in teams across a range of disciplines.
• Ability to carry out pastoral care and appreciate the issues faced by a diverse body of students.
An appreciation of the bilingual and bicultural character of modern Wales.

Desirable
• A record of innovative and excellent teaching in HE.
• Familiarity with issues relating to quality assurance, student recruitment and satisfaction, pastoral care and student engagement, and the Welsh and UK Higher Education landscape.
• The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.
