Department of Land Economy

Land Economy considers the role and use of land, real-estate and the environment within the economy. The Environmental Economy and Policy (EEP) group is one of two research groups within the Department.

The Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG) was established in 2014 within the Department, in order to conduct integrative research on the governance of environmental transitions. C-EENRG is housed in the David Attenborough Building and brings together lawyers, economists, political scientists, historians, natural scientists and engineers.

Ben Chester Cheong

Ben Chester Cheong is a PhD candidate in the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge. His area of research is the intersection between sustainability law and company law, with a focus on climate justice and climate risk. Ben holds a lectureship in law at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) since December 2018.

Dr Malavika Rao

I am a visiting researcher at C-EENRG/Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge for 24 months until April 2026.

Dr André Butler

Dr André Butler is a Research Associate in the Department of Land Economy, working in the Centre for Landscape Regeneration with Professor Shailaja Fennell.

Using quasi-experimental methods, his research has broadly focused on investigating the drivers of economic growth and development in the agricultural sector, as well as their consequences on the environment and political economy.

My research focuses on the policies and economics of implementing low-carbon hydrogen energy in the GCC countries in the Middle East.

He is also interested in econometric methods and applying novel statistical tools to real-world policy problems.

Jiashu is a PhD student in the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (CEENRG). His doctoral research focuses on energy policy, technological innovation, and climate finance. He is supervised by Professor Laura Diaz Anadon.
